Jacobs Not Wanting It Enough
I know it’s Phoenix Suns tipoff day but I just couldn’t resist touching on a quote from Giants running back Brandon Jacobs. I’ve never really thought of Brandon Jacobs as a particularly smart guy. I had a few friends who played football with him while he was at Coffeyville Community College (Kansas) who certainly influenced that opinion, one that grew stronger when he decided to attend Auburn in spite of the fact that he’d be competing for playing time with Cadillac Williams and Ronnie Brown. Yet his latest quote concerning the Cardinals/Giants Sunday Night game is a little ridiculous:
“Not to take anything away from their defense, we just didn’t want it enough,” Jacobs said. “I don’t think they were able to really stop us. But we had to try and mix it up and do a bunch of different things, and that’s what happened. We have to go out and execute no matter what’s called. We didn’t want it enough.”
Curious. Maybe someone should point out to Jacobs the way in which the Giants came by their two touchdowns:
(1) – Kurt Warner throws an interception, Giants start a drive on the Arizona 29 yard line.
(2) – Fluky 62-yard touchdown pass off a tipped ball to Hakeem Nicks.
Provided Jacobs was referring solely to the running game it should be noted that though the Giants carried the ball 26 times for 107 yards – 25 of it was on one carry that immediately followed the Warner interception listed above. Take out that carry and the Giants yards per carry drops to just 3.28. You can debate the fairness of this statistic but it is certainly no worse than Jacobs attributing the Giants offensive struggles to themselves and not the Cardinals defense.
No matter how bad the Giants offense “wanted it” they got flat out-played by the Cardinals defense. It’s a fact.
