Today’s “it’s not really news but, fuck it, ESPN’s reporting it anyway” file contains the story of a recently-signed Eagles QB who was photographed drinking a vodka pineapple juice in an airport bar. I read this story about Michael Vick, and the accompanying reaction of Tony Dungy, and it reminded me of the reports of Steve McNair’s BAC surfacing at the time of his death. Both stories seem to be unnecessary criticisms of guys who had/have plenty of legitimate areas to criticize.
Look if this were Donte Stallworth, maybe its a different story. But, Michael Vick’s crimes involved the cruel and brutal torture and slaying of dogs. I don’t think he ever claimed to have committed these crimes because “alcohol made him.” If the terms of his reinstatement prohibit him from drinking, then I understand this is a story. But, the Eagles say this conduct is not prohibited. So I ask the question: who cares? I can’t really see the concern over a guy having a drink (and a fufu one at that) in an airport bar because Delta can’t ever seem to land a flight on time.
