Good Luck Gang

Good Luck Gang

Tonight marked the debut of the new Joel McHale vehicle Community and besides the thrill of seeing Chevy Chase working again I somewhat enjoyed it.  I watch The Soup regularly so I’m going to give McHale every opportunity to prove he’s more than the next Chris Kataan (or something like that) – however I have two issues with the premiere both centering around issues so minor that there is no rational reason they would bother me.

(1)  - The general premise of the show is that McHale’s character – Jeff Winger – is a lawyer who was suspended from the state bar because they discovered that his college degree was not valid.  It is implied that Winger has been a lawyer for a number of years yet the bar has JUST discovered this? Now I’m not a brilliant man but I know for a fact that the bar goes through just about every little detail of your life before you are admitted, I think they probably wouldn’t let somebody just sneak right in.  Add to that they don’t really deal with whether or not Winger attended law school because well…why would you mention that?

(2) – They imply that community college is a 4 year ordeal.  I’ll dispose of this one easily – it’s two years.  I lived in Kansas for a number of years and had a LOT of dumb friends who went to community college.  It could actually end up taking you four years (or 6) – but it’s a two year program.

Yes I realize these are ridiculous complaints and likely not worthy of a 300 word post complaining about it – but who’s the guy with a blog?  Not you.  Also you’re talking to a dude who absolutely cannot get past the fact that on The O.C. they keep referring to my favorite network as ESPN Classics and mentioned they showed the Lakers v. Pistons NBA Finals from 1986.  Research ain’t hard boys and girls.

Reason number three (and by far the worst): The show has a Billy Madison plot which implies that if McHale adequately completes his undergraduate degree (which Scott Howard artfully points out is impossible in community college) he will be reinstated to the practice of law.

Wrong. Lying to the bar and your law school = disbarred. Kinda of a big oversight in my opinion. If I wrote the show, I would have went with the Gordon Bombay plot: slick lawyer forced to teach community college classes as part of a community service sentence.

Reason number four: What in the hell did they put McHale in for this show? A blue blazer, dress shirt, and sweater combined with Adidas warm-up pants and tennis shoes? (See pic above in the post) I think that’s the exact outfit that one of the crazies wears in the Dream Team w/ Michael Keaton.

I like your plot better. Also RE: Point (4) it kind of reminded me of Sean William Scott’s clothes in Road Trip.
